Copa America | Venezuela in the quarter-finals

Salomón Rondón converted a penalty in the 57the minute and Venezuela qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa América with a 1-0 victory against Mexico in Inglewood.




Venezuela, who opened with a 2-1 victory over Ecuador, are assured of finishing among the top two in Group B.

Mexico recorded a 1-0 victory against Jamaica and has three points as do Ecuador, who beat the Reggae Boyz 3-1.

Mexico will face Ecuador in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday, while Venezuela will face already-eliminated Jamaica in Austin, Texas.

Venezuela ended a 13-game winless streak against El Tri.

The penalty was awarded when Julián Quiñoned pushed Aramburu in the penalty area.

Alomón Rondón sent his kick to the right of goalkeeper Julio González, who dived to his left.

Rondón scored his 42e goal in 107 caps.

Ecuador, which bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Venezuela, won its first match at this tournament since a 4-0 win over Haiti in 2016, ending an eight-game winless streak.

Kasey Palmer’s own goal in the 13the minute put Ecuador ahead and Páez, who is only 17, made it 2-0 with a penalty in the fourth minute of first-half added time.

Michail Antonio scored Jamaica’s first Copa America goal in the 54the minute, and Minda scored the last goal in the first minute of added time of the second half.

Ecuador has three points and Jamaica none.

Ecuador closes Group B against Mexico in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday, while Jamaica faces Venezuela.
