Copa América | Canadians proud, despite defeat

Canada’s unexpected presence in the Copa América semifinals was a source of excitement for fans gathered at the Burgundy Lion on Tuesday night in Montreal. The English pub transformed into a headquarters for fans of the Canadian team in this match against Argentina. Even if the Rouge fans did not expect a victory against the defending champions, they were radiant with optimism.

“At every international tournament, I had to choose a team to support. Finally, I can support my team, my country, for a major tournament. It’s the best feeling ever,” says fan Pierre-Louis Larochelle, who has been playing soccer since a young age.

Every good play by the Canadian team draws applause and shouts from the crowd. It is during Argentina’s second goal that we hear strong opposition from the fans. “Offside!” several of them exclaim.

Red clothing and Canadian flags add to the atmosphere at the Burgundy Lion. For Canadian Armed Forces veteran Christian Bechard, Reds games foster national pride. “People get closer to Canada,” he says.
