Copa America | Canada qualified for the quarter-finals

Canada advanced to the Copa América quarterfinals with a 0-0 draw against Chile on Saturday night in Orlando, Florida.

The result allows them to finish second in their group, behind Lionel Messi’s Argentina. It is the first time that the Canadian men’s national team has made it this far in a major tournament not limited to Concacaf countries.

The game against the Chileans was marked by physical and disjointed play. The Canadians were unable to take advantage of a power play for more than an hour after Chilean defenseman Gabriel Suazo was penalized for pushing Richie Laryea.

In three games, Canada has so far only scored one goal, that of Jonathan David against the Peruvians. In the next round, the Reds will face the winners of Group B – probably the Venezuelans.

More details to come.
