Sunday November 6 marks the kick-off of COP 27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. As extreme weather events intensify, what is this great new climate summit for? What are the issues ?

Historic drought, mega-fires and devastating floods have marked the past few years. So the boss of the UN has set a demanding roadmap. “COP 27 must be the place to fill the deficit of ambition, credibility and solidarity”said António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Paris Agreement set the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C see 2°C. But today, the trajectory is estimated at 2.6°C by the end of the century.

The COP 27 meets on the African continent, particularly affected by climate change. “What we hope is that the decisions are effectively implemented. They are going to have to make decisions that have real effects in Africa.”hopes Nadège Sandrine Njamen-Njamfa, participant from Congo COP 27. According to a study of 25,000 people from five continents, six out of ten inhabitants say they are ready to accept the main changes necessary to save the planet.
