The evening had started calmly on Friday, but the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) quickly had to intervene with additional personnel for what it described as an “aggressive crowd” on its Twitter account.
Around 8 p.m., the OPS had to deploy officers with helmets and shields to disperse the crowd at the corners of Rideau and Sussex streets. Authorities have arrested several individuals on Rideau Street. “Police remain on site to ensure security,” tweeted the OPS. The police also confirm that several vehicles attempted to occupy a downtown parking lot earlier in the day. Almost all of the vehicles left the scene, but one of them had to be towed.
