He has been in prison since 2019 and is undoubtedly likely to stay there for a very long time… Even until the end of his life! Indeed, a few years ago, R Kelly faced justice in federal court in Brooklyn and pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him. As a reminder, the one who won three Grammy Awards with I Believe I Can Fly, was tried for extortion, sexual exploitation of a minor, kidnapping, corruption and forced labor, over a period ranging from 1994 to 2018. A very long list which greatly surprised his fans. The latter not imagining for a single second that the artist could have committed such acts.
The indictment related facts that were chilling and hard to imagine. Indeed, the star rapper of the 90s would have run a network that recruited and prepared young girls to have sex with him. Worse still, the girls, victims of this horrible network, were locked in their hotel rooms when the singer was on tour and had to stay there. Dress level, he would have even asked them to wear loose clothes when they were not with him, to “keep their heads down” and to call him “papa” (“daddy”).
Prison for 30 years
Among the alleged victims, a well-known singer would have been one of them. It would be Aaliyah, a 90s R’n’B star who died in a plane crash in 2001, at just 22 years old. Indeed, the indictment also accused R Kelly of having corrupted an official of the State of Illinois in 1994. And this in order to obtain false documents to marry a minor. An accusation that refers to the marriage, finally canceled, of the singer with the young woman, then 15 years old.
This Wednesday, June 29, Robert Kelly, better known for his legendary blase, has just been sentenced to 30 years in prison for sex crimes by a New York court.
