Novak Djokovic wants video replays to be used more effectively after Felix Auger-Aliassime was beaten on a controversial match point decision in the third round of the Cincinnati Open.
The Quebecer lost to Britain’s Jack Draper on Friday. On match point, he hit a ball that appeared to hit Draper’s racket and his side of the court before crossing the net, which would mean a point for Auger-Aliassime.
The chair umpire awarded the point and the match to Draper. Auger-Aliassime argued his case to the umpire, but tennis does not allow replays for any reason other than to establish whether a ball landed out of bounds or not.
On X, Djokovic called the situation “embarrassing,” writing that it is “ridiculous” that the referee cannot change his decision based on video reviews in this case.
The world number two and Olympic gold medallist said everyone watching on television sees the replay but the players are “kept in the dark”.
Auger-Aliassime said on social media that it was a tough way to lose, but he’s moving on to focus on Flushing Meadows.
