Contract extension requested | Jordan Love won’t train until deal is reached

(Green Bay) Jordan Love will not practice with the Green Bay Packers until negotiations on a contract extension are completed, general manager Brian Gutekunst said Monday.

Gutekunst said Love reported to camp last week but didn’t want to practice until he had a deal in place. His contract expires at the end of the season.

“We’d like him to practice, it’s important for him to be on the field,” the GM said before the team’s first practice. “You know how important practice is to be able to work with teammates. But until that’s fixed, he’s not going to be there.”

Gutekunst, however, is hopeful that an agreement can be reached with his quarterback soon. He added that Love is taking part in all other team activities.

“We’re working very hard to reach an agreement,” he noted. “I think it’s very important to us. What’s encouraging is that both sides want the same thing.”

Love’s decision leaves the Packers entering training camp with Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt as the only available quarterbacks.

The Packers signed Love to a one-year, $22.5 million contract extension in May 2023. The deal allowed the Packers to evaluate Love in his first season as a starter following the departure of Aaron Rodgers.

Love responded by improving game by game and leading the NFL’s youngest team to a 10-9 record and a playoff appearance.
