The ban on the marketing of oysters from the Arcachon basin (Gironde) was lifted on Friday January 19. It lasted a month, due to contamination with norovirus. Three associations filed a complaint against the manager of the sanitation network.

Oysters from Arcachon (Gironde) are once again authorized for sale on Friday January 19. If they are not yet back on the stalls of the Capucins market in Bordeaux (Gironde), it will be possible to taste them again this weekend, to the great satisfaction of consumers. For the fishmonger Frédéric Hoarau too, It’s good news. During the month of closure, oyster farmers did not stop producing oysters, to be ready to regain consumer confidence. However, a concern remains.

A 36 million euro plan

Thierry Lafon, oyster farmer in Gujan-Mestras (Gironde), chairs one of the three associations which filed a complaint against the manager of the sanitation network. According to him, a retention basin which stores sewer water before treatment was saturated due to heavy rains. He denounces illegal dumping into the surrounding ditches. THE norovirus, present in human stools, would thus have transited via ditches and streams directly into the waters of the Arcachon basin. A 36 million euro plan has been decided to renovate the sanitation network.
