Consumer Reports Awards | Japanese brands still at the top

Essential annual tradition in the automotive world, the American magazine Consumer Reports once again released the results of its vehicle reliability survey. Based on more than 300,000 questionnaires, the portrait is particularly comprehensive. This year again, the Japanese manufacturers occupy the top of the ranking, but there are also surprises.

Thus, among the brands occupying the first 10 ranks in the list, 6 are of Japanese origin. After slipping to third place last year, Toyota regains the crown, followed by its luxury brand Lexus, which was ranked first last year. BMW completes the podium, making a surprising jump of 10 places compared to last year. Among the most significant improvements is Lincoln, which ranks 10e rank, climbing 14 places thanks, among other things, to its Corsair compact SUV, which received the “recommended” rating. Volkswagen, Jeep and Mercedes-Benz occupy the bottom three spots respectively.

The reliable hybrid, the electric a little less

Among the major trends in this annual review, Consumer Reports noted that conventional hybrid vehicles remain as reliable, if not more so, than combustion engine models. On the other hand, we paint a less glowing portrait of plug-in and electric models. Among plug-in hybrids, the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Prius Prime as well as the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid scored below average. Several electric models also had below-average reliability records, including the electric Hyundai Kona, which stood out as the least reliable vehicle using this type of energy.
