consultations with a psychologist increased by 60% among 18-24 year olds, according to a Doctolib study

The increase in consultations, particularly among younger people, among psychologists and psychiatrists between 2019 and 2022 is particularly notable in the Grand Est and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions. This is the outcome of a Doctolib study published this Thursday.

Between 2019 and 2022, consultations with a psychologist increased by 60% among 18-24 year olds and by 30% among 0-17 year olds, points out Thursday October 12 a barometer carried out by Doctolib with the FondaMental Foundation and that France Inter was able to consult exclusively. The study analyzed data from appointments made on the platform, knowing that around 7,500 psychologists are registered on the platform.

This increase in consultations for the youngest is also visible among psychiatrists: appointments increased by 50% for 18-24 year olds and 10% for 0-17 year olds, between 2019 and 2022, and after the pandemic of Covid. “The very high availability and responsiveness of the platforms” partly explains this increase in consultations, according to Isabelle Durand Zaleski, professor of public health speaking to France Inter. “On the other hand, there is, I think, a destigmatization” mental health issues, judges the specialist.

The increase in consultations with psychologists and psychiatrists is particularly visible in two regions. There are twice as many appointments made in the Grand Est compared to 2019 and almost three times more in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Consultations among younger people are also increasing more quickly in these two regions. “In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, there are a lot of young people and students, this population was particularly in need of help during the Covid period”, explains Isabelle Durand Zaleski. The Grand Est, for its part, was “particularly affected by the Covid pandemic”.

The barometer finally notes that the waiting time for an appointment with a specialist has remained stable in France. You have to wait on average 16 days to see a psychiatrist and 9 days to consult a psychologist.
