In Puy-de-Dôme, house construction is down sharply at the start of 2023. In question? The increase in the cost of materials and that of the borrowing rate which exceeds 3%.
Construction sites in the Puy-de-Dôme are increasingly rare. Sylvain Massonnec, house builder, generally builds 100 houses a year. This year, it should only produce 70. The situation is critical. “Over the past fifteen years, we have spent a lot of time recruiting because we had a labor shortage. Finally, we had attracted new skills to us, young people, we had trained them and, alas, we risks losing them because of the crisis”laments the entrepreneur.
The obstacles to building a house
The French who have decided to take the plunge and have their house built have to deal with the rise in the price of materials. Angelique José is one of them. “I took everything that was sanitary, furniture abroad since it’s cheaper”, she explains. The other obstacle to building is the increase in the borrowing rate which now exceeds 3%. As a result, the construction market collapsed in Puy-de-Dôme. In the department, the number of building permits issued fell by 17% in the space of a year and by 38% over the last quarter.
