(Montreal) The FTQ-Construction and other unions plan to demonstrate on Tuesday in front of the National Assembly, to mark the start of consultations on reform of the construction industry.
Bill 51 tabled by the Minister of Labor, Jean Boulet, aims to ensure greater mobility of workers between the regions of Quebec and to increase the versatility of workers by allowing task sharing between certain trades.
While employers’ organizations generally applauded the tabling of this bill, the situation is different for unions, who are concerned about the repercussions on their members, particularly in regions further from major centers.
It is to assert its fears and demands that the largest union organization in the industry, the FTQ-Construction, will demonstrate in front of the National Assembly on Tuesday morning, at the start of the consultations.
Other unions have already committed to demonstrating alongside it, including that of the Steelworkers, another large union in the private sector which is affiliated with the FTQ. And the president of the FTQ, Magali Picard, will also attend.
