Conservatives rake in $35 million for Poilievre’s first year

(Ottawa) The Conservative Party of Canada raised more than $35 million in Pierre Poilievre’s first full year as party leader – and the federal Liberals raised less than half that.

The party believes that its figures for 2023 demonstrate that it could not be clearer that Canadians expect change from the current government.

The Conservatives had raised $12 million less in 2022, the year of the leadership race that led to the election of Mr. Poilievre.

“These results prove that my common-sense plan to cut taxes, build housing, fix the budget, and stop crime has broad support,” Poilievre said in a statement.

Documents filed with Elections Canada indicate that a third of the total funds raised by the Conservatives last year were raised in the last three months of the year, which included more than $7 million in December alone .

The Liberal Party of Canada closed the year raising more than $15 million, with a similar increase in the fourth quarter.

The New Democrats raised less than 3 million during the year, and the Bloc Québécois less than 1 million.

Health Minister Mark Holland dismissed Conservative fundraising efforts in lengthy exchanges with reporters on Wednesday.

“Holding a mirror up to people’s anger and just making them angrier, pushing them into their hurt and into their fear, has a lot of benefit,” he said. And the Conservatives have been extremely successful in exploiting this. »
