In a video posted on his Twitter account in the evening, former CCP leader Stephen Harper explains why he chose to support the candidacy of Pierre Poilievre, a former cabinet minister.

“In recent years, he has been one of the most vocal and effective critics of the Trudeau government,” said Stephen Harper.

“Pierre Poilievre talks about the issues, and especially the economic issues, that matter: slow growth, debt, inflation, lack of jobs and housing, and the need to fix institutions that are not fulfilling their duties to Canadian families,” he continues.

“That’s why he has strong support from our caucus and our members, and that’s why he has been able to attract the most new members and a whole new generation to our party. This is how we will win the next election. In my opinion, Pierre was able to demonstrate that he was in the best position to do so,” concludes the former Canadian Prime Minister.

If Stephen Harper had remained rather discreet in this race so far, his support for Pierre Poilievre will not surprise insiders of federal politics.

Indeed, conservative sources close to him affirmed in February to The Press that he still takes a very dim view of the idea of another candidate for the Conservative leadership, former Quebec Premier Jean Charest, taking the helm of the political party he led for more than a decade.

The new Conservative leader will be known on September 10.
