Would short, seemingly innocuous videos threaten the security of the United States? There, TikTok has 170 million users, or more than one in two Americans. However, unlike Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, TikTok belongs to a Chinese company: ByteDance. For experts, the Chinese government could use the personal data of certain users.
An application in the pay of the Chinese Communist Party?
According to a specialist journalist from TikTok, the links with the Chinese state are very real: “We know that ByteDance, this large Chinese tech company, has an obligation, particularly towards the Chinese government, to follow the Communist Party’s project”, explains Océanne Herrero. In 2022, TikTok admitted that several of its employees had spied on American journalists. However, the firm assures that it has taken measures to ensure that this does not happen again.
