Three years after the war which affected the region, Nagorno-Karabakh is the scene of an offensive by Azerbaijan on an Armenian position on Tuesday September 19. Russia, which is trying to play mediator, calls for compliance with the agreements.
In Stepanakert, capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, bursts of gunfire and sounds of explosions can be heard. Azerbaijan announced it was launching an anti-terrorist operation there on Tuesday September 19, justified according to it by the death of four police officers and two civilians in the explosion of mines on a construction site. Images provided by Azeri forces reportedly show a destroyed Armenian position.
Russia calls for calm
In this landlocked region, 120,000 Armenians are demanding their autonomy. The region has already been the scene of two wars, in the early 1990s and in the fall of 2020. Russia, which plays mediator, calls Azerbaïdjan and Armenia to avoid provocations and respect agreements. Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of causing a humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh. Since the end of 2022, the L corridoratchine, the only road that connects the region to Armenia, is blocked.
