The surge in wheat prices is linked to the halt in exports to Russia and Ukraine. The Russian navy prevents any boat from leaving the Black Sea while Ukraine demands that the wheat produced be supplied only to its population.

As soon as you leave the city of Mykolaiv (Ukraine), the large agricultural plains in the south of the country are transformed into battlefields. Missiles are planted in the ground and remains of Russian helicopters are even found in the middle of a wheat plantation. For two weeks, Ukrainian farmers were unable to access their fields, with Russian soldiers stationed right next to them. “They kept shooting, constantly, they were shooting, it was terrible”testifies one of them.

Other fields have to be planted using machines. However, the essence is rationed in Ukraine and the cistern the farmer is empty. Ukraine is the 5th country exporting wheat maize many agricultural regions of the country have been or are currently affected by the fighting. The Ukrainian government talks about 30% less wheat production. The port is completely shut down. Russian army ships block entrances and exits. A farmer can no longer sell her wheat stock dating from 2021. Since the beginning of the war, the price of wheat has increased by 70%.
