This time, it is accepted. After a first request for early release rejected in March 2023, former South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius finally obtained conditional release, the country’s prison administration announced on Friday, November 24. She specifies that this measure will be effective “from January 5, 2024”. The decision comes ten years later the murder of the athlete’s girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in a case that captivated the world.
Convicted of the murder of his partner, Reeva Steenkamp, March 3, 2014, the first disabled athlete in history to participate in the Olympic Games with able-bodied people, appeared in court three times. Sentenced to five years in prison in September 2014 and found guilty of manslaughter, he was retried in August 2015 because the prosecutor appealed. This time he was sentenced to six years in prison. Considering this sentence too lenient, the prosecution appealed again. The third trial ended in November 2017. Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison for the murder of his partner on February 14, 2013.
