The 26-year-old MacKinnon has nine goals and 34 assists in 31 games this season. He was named Central Division captain for the NHL All-Star Game on Feb. 5 in Las Vegas, but his presence is now in doubt.
MacKinnon was injured when he was tackled by Boston Bruins forward Taylor Hall in the first period of the Avalanche’s 4-3 overtime win on Wednesday.
Hall’s shoulder caused MacKinnon’s stick to hit his own face. Blood poured from his nose as the Avalanche player lay on the ice.
MacKinnon was able to leave the box under his own power, but he did not return to play.
The Avalanche, who signed a 17and straight win at home in Wednesday’s matchup, visits the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.
