The Mexican club won the second leg 3-1, played at the prestigious Azteca Stadium and secured their pass to the next round. Cruz Azul won 1-0 at Tim Hortons Stadium on February 16.
Ángel Rodrigo Romero, Rafael Baca and Juan Escobar rattled the ropes for the locals.
Former Montreal Impact David Choinière was the club’s only scorer in the Canadian Premier League. His heavy strike low to the ground, from outside the penalty area, deceived the vigilance of goalkeeper Sebastián Jurado.
The Mexican league champions in the 2020-2021 season have dominated in every chapter. They took 26 shots on net and allowed only five – only Choinière’s shot found the target. They also maintained 69% possession of the ball.
The Mexico club posted a record of 4-1-1 (3and rank) this season in the Mexican league.
The first game of the home and away series between CF Montreal and Cruz Azul will be played in Mexico City between March 8 and 10.
The teams will then cross swords in Montreal between March 15 and 17 for the ultimate duel.
