From Monday, November 1, millions of motorists will have to switch to winter equipment to continue traveling on the roads of 48 departments. No fine is foreseen at national level for this first year, but some municipalities have decided to act independently.

November 1 is a new date to note for many French motorists. It is the one from which the wearing of tires or snow chains must be applied, in 48 departments of France. Some motorists are ready, while tourists passing through the region are less so. “If there is snow, I would be fine, but if there is not, I find it a little stupid”, explains a motorist.

For this first year of application of the winter equipment rule, the government has decided to demonstrate pedagogy by not applying any fines. But some mayors decided to be severe immediately, as in Gérardmer (Vosges). A decision assumed by the mayor of the municipality Stessy Speissmann. “It is really in this desire for security and to say that, when we come to the mountains, we equip ourselves”, he explains. The fine will be 35 euros in the town, and will climb to 135 euros next year, nationally.
