Having traveled to Sweden multiple times across different seasons, I have always encountered a culture of politeness and warmth, albeit with a serious demeanor. Interestingly, these traits seem to echo in the design and character of the Volvo EX90. Recently, I had the chance to experience the Volvo EX90 equipped with the Twin Performance powertrain on the scenic roads around La Rochelle in October 2024, allowing me to form a first impression.
Volvo EX90: A Design That Speaks Volumes
The Volvo EX90 presents itself as a striking monolith—an impressive structure that balances massiveness with an aerodynamically efficient design. Spanning 5.04 meters in length (9 cm longer than the XC90), 1.96 meters in width, and 1.74 meters in height, this SUV is crafted to minimize wind resistance. Features such as a solid grille, wind-tunnel-optimized mirrors, and retractable door handles have been meticulously engineered to enhance aerodynamic performance.
While the Volvo EX90 embraces an imposing presence, it also signifies a modern evolution of the brand’s design language, borrowing elements from the XC90 launched a decade ago. The Thor’s hammer-shaped lighting signature at the front cleverly conceals a retractable LED panel, while the LiDAR sensor on the roof is reminiscent of a taxi stand, adding a functional touch to its aesthetics.
At the rear, the design is equally captivating, with lights divided into two sections and a C-shaped main element integrated into the tailgate. A sleek black strip connecting these components emphasizes the vehicle’s distinct visual identity, making it truly stand out on the road.
Interior Comfort Meets Ergonomic Challenges
Stepping inside the Volvo EX90, the first thing that strikes you is the exceptional quality of the finishes. Instead of traditional leather, the seats and steering wheel feature an innovative material derived from pine sap, aligning with Volvo’s commitment to sustainability. Although this eco-friendly approach might pose a challenge for some luxury buyers who expect leather, the overall aesthetic is refined and minimalist, reminiscent of early Tesla designs.
The front seats are a hallmark of Swedish comfort, designed for long journeys with features like massage functions and intuitive electric adjustments. However, the ergonomic design poses some challenges. For instance, the vehicle key is a card that must be held close to the handle to lock the car, which complicates the hands-free access experience. Additionally, starting the vehicle requires placing the card on a specific charging spot, which can be inconvenient if your phone needs charging at the same time.
While the smartphone key option offers a modern solution, the cabin’s window controls—with only two buttons managing four windows—can prove tricky for family use. The adjustment of mirrors and steering wheel via the central touchscreen, although visually appealing, lacks practicality in day-to-day handling.
Despite these ergonomic quirks, the Volvo EX90 provides ample space, with rear seats accommodating adults comfortably and a third row suitable for children. The trunk boasts a generous 655 liters of capacity, which reduces to 310 liters when all seven seats are in use. Additionally, a 46-liter frunk adds to its practicality.
Advanced Infotainment and Audio Experience
Equipped with a small display for driving information, the Volvo EX90 centralizes its functions in a 14.5-inch touchscreen running on Android Automotive, providing access to various applications through Google’s app store. While the infotainment system does allow for Google Maps use, it requires shifting focus from the road to check electric consumption, which could be improved.
The audio system is where the EX90 truly shines. Our test model featured a Bose setup with 14 speakers and 940 watts, which, while impressive, can be outdone by the optional Bowers & Wilkins system boasting 25 speakers and 1,610 watts. This premium audio experience transforms the cabin into a concert hall, ideal for music enthusiasts willing to invest in superior sound quality.
In conclusion, the Volvo EX90 is a remarkable blend of innovative design, comfort, and technology. While it excels in many areas, some ergonomic features could benefit from refinement to enhance the overall driving experience.
