complementary health insurance increases their prices

The Meilleurtaux Assurance study shows that, for a typical family with two adults and two children, it takes around 1,170 euros per year on average for complementary health insurance, for a classic guarantee. Or 6.5% increase, roughly the level of inflation. Complementary health insurance has passed on the rise in prices and over the past two years, the French have also spent more on their health after 2020, where confinement requires, they had consulted less.

This average hides strong disparities especially between regions, there are hundreds of euros of differences depending on where you live. In Paris and Île-de-France, for example, families pay a high price for their supplement: often more than 1,300 euros per year. Ditto in the Bouches-du-Rhône, or in Seine-Saint-Denis, yet the poorest department in France, while in Vendée, Mayenne, Sarthe or Deux-Sèvres, it is 200 euros less. At the bottom of the table, Alsace and Moselle, but that’s because there is a specific social security system.

These differences are justified by the density of the healthcare offer. In Paris and Île-de-France, there are more doctors, hospitals, specialists and the cost overruns are higher there. On the other hand, in places where there are fewer doctors, inevitably, we go there less, and we spend less. The supplements incorporate these variations.

What the study shows, too, is that seniors pay a high price for their complementary health insurance. In more than ten departments, it takes more than 3,000 euros a year for a couple over 60, with again significant differences depending on the territory – 450 euros difference between Parisians and for example inhabitants from Allier or Morbihan.

It will be necessary to see at the beginning of the year whether the prices of complementary services will continue to increase. The period when the complementary ones update their prices, knowing that the insurers have committed for 2023 to contain their prices, in particular for the young and the most fragile.
