The association fighting for the abolition of bullfighting, Alliance Anticorrida, filed a complaint with the Nîmes public prosecutor’s office after the death of a young bull during a bullfight in the Beaucaire arenas in the Gard department on July 27, reports France Bleu Gard Lozère. It denounces the conditions in which the animal was killed. A very rare case, which had outraged animal protection associations as well as the public and the bullfighting community.
As the young bullfighter had not managed to kill the animal in the allotted time, the team of “puntilleros” had then tried to finish it off from the edge of the ring, on the other side of a fence, with daggers, without success, leaving the animal to suffer for several minutes.
“In a normal context, the offence of acts of cruelty and serious abuse committed against an animal in captivity are criminally punishable. But they are tolerated in certain cities in the South where an uninterrupted local tradition can be invoked. In this case, the offence is perfectly characterised but the justifying fact relating to the existence of an uninterrupted local tradition is not applicable”, explains the Anticorrida Alliance in its press release. Six individuals and legal entities are targeted by this complaint, including the municipality of Beaucaire and the organizers.
