On Monday, November 9, the episcopate decided to commit to compensating victims of sexual abuse in the Church, including in prescribed cases. The money will come from goods sold by the Church.

After performing an act of penance, the bishops of France decided that it was necessary to compensate victims of sexual abuse within the Church, analyzing each case individually. An independent national recognition and redress body will be responsible for analyzing cases, including prescribed cases. The money used will come from goods sold by the Church and a loan will be made only if the sale of goods is not sufficient.

“We will use the security reserves at our disposal”, Explain Mgr Eric from Moulins-Beaufort, president of the French Bishops’ Conference. The associations are satisfied, believing that the victims can partially turn the page. Groups of job will also be created in order to work on the prevention of sexual crimes and to avoid new cases in the years to come. Almost 330,000 victims will have to be compensated.
