Compassion and altruism | The duty

It can be very trying for sensitive souls to read and see reports, almost live and daily, on the cruel and atrocious abuses perpetrated in the Middle East. Knowing that human beings fall under bombs, survive painfully or die in total destitution inevitably calls for compassion towards our fellow human beings. The spectacle of the suffering of others makes us sad and aware of our helplessness.

Looking away and remaining silent is not an option, and amounts to condoning cruelty, which is always inexcusable.

Wars and deadly conflicts always involve two opposing parties, who sometimes have a visceral hatred for each other for many years.

Each side justifies its abuses by invoking the right to defend itself against the enemy and claims its legitimate rights.

Can we campaign for peace without taking sides with one or the other of the belligerents?

Can we demand compassion and altruism towards our fellow human beings without worrying about the moods of Hamas or Netanyahu?

Can we hope for the delivery of humanitarian aid without being accused of cooperating with the enemy?

Can we ask Hamas to negotiate a ceasefire in good faith without being accused of not supporting the Palestinian cause?

How can we make both parties understand that war is no longer an option? What should we do or not do to avoid fueling hatred and tensions?
