Comoros: rise in the price of rice

For nearly a week, the public authorities have increased the price of rice, the most consumed food in the Union of the Comoros.

This is an increase that comes after that of petroleum products. With the arrival in droves of vacationers and the wedding festivities that follow one another, some believe that the return of the baton will be made at the start of the school year.

After the increase in the price of petroleum products, electricity, building materials, it is the turn of rice. The decision was made public on July 13 by 3 ministers. An increase of around 33% which is timely, with the wedding season in full swing. It should be remembered that this cereal is widely used in certain customary festivities. Because of the pandemic, almost two years went by without a celebration.

Also, there have never been so many grand marriages as during this period. In some localities, up to 10 tons of rice are used for a single marriage, at the rate of 764 euros per ton. Before the increase, it sold at 569 euros.

The grand-marriage symbolizing excess, no matter the price of rice, it will be bought.

The return of the stick will be at the start of the school year in the opinion of many. When the festivities have ended and the famous “I’m coming”, holidaymakers from France will have returned home.

For the moment, the most consumed cereal cannot be found in Moroni. 50 containers of rice are stuck in Anjouan waiting for a boat to bring them here.
