The damage is significant in the Tonga Islands, Sunday, January 16, the day after the major eruption of an underwater volcano that caused a tidal wave. Communications with Tonga have not yet been fully restored.

These are the latest accessible videos of the Tongan archipelago, filmed just as the tsunami hit the shores. We see that a young woman seems trapped in a church. On the phone, his friends tell him to go out. “I can not, she says, the water is too high.” A few minutes later, the call cuts off. For 24 hours, and the impressive eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai on Saturday January 15, only a few photos have reached us. If you can see gutted streets, it is difficult to assess the extent of the damage.

Undersea communication cables would be damaged. AT 3,000 miles away, in Polynesia, many people have no news of their loved ones and concern is mounting. The only information comes from the New Zealand authorities, and remain very brief. Thousands of kilometers from the Tongan volcano, waves several meters high hit the coasts, from California to Japan. Damage has were reported, but no casualties. The tidal wave threat has generally passed for these countries in the Pacific Ocean.
