More training places, higher salaries, openness to professionals from other fields… So many avenues for reform to solve the labor shortages affecting the early childhood sector, which have been proposed by a committee of professionals commissioned by the government, Wednesday June 29

To remedy the shortage of staff in crèches and home childcare, the government should adopt a “ambitious salary increase trajectory”, according to the committee composed of representatives of professionals, unions, associations, as well as managers of structures. It also recommends increasing the number of places in initial training, going “seek (…) talents wherever they are” and to launch a campaign to promote the sector in September.

Professionals are also calling for administrative simplifications, such as that of procedures allowing “validation of acquired experience” (VAE) or certain competitions for the recruitment of educators of young children. The committee also suggests that home childminders can work in crèches. “from the third year of experience”just like the Atsem (territorial agents specialized in nursery schools) who assist the teachers, even the professors of the schools.

The problem “does not date from yesterday but has worsened with the Covid crisis”explained to AFP the president of the committee, Elisabeth Laithieret. “We wanted to respond without affecting the quality of the reception”developed the former local elected representative in Nancy who followed this file for 12 years within the association of mayors of France, “but it was also a question of thinking about deeper reforms, to avoid that we decide today on a bandage and that we find ourselves in the same situation in three years”.
