Faced with the crisis of confidence that the Permanent Anti-Corruption Unit (UPAC) is going through, Commissioner Frédérick Gaudreau is open to changing the name of the police organization.
Mr. Gaudreau was in Quebec on Tuesday to present his annual report.
Last week, UPAC confirmed that two of its officers were relieved of their duties following a decision by the Court of Quebec that was very critical of their work.
This episode adds to a long list of setbacks that have affected the credibility of the organization.
Responding to reporters on Tuesday, Mr. Gaudreau bluntly admitted that UPAC’s brand image is tarnished. While raising the possibility of a name change, he believes in maintaining the mandate to permanently investigate allegations of corruption.
“I can understand that the word UPAC over time has been questioned,” he said. There is this crisis of confidence that we are currently having. “
