ComediHa! saves productions of Just for Laughs

Musical comedy Waitresswhose production seemed threatened by the bankruptcy of the Just for Laughs Group, will finally be presented as planned this summer.

The ComediHa team! de la Capitale-Nationale announced this Friday that it had reached an agreement with the rights holders and Just for Laughs (JPR) to resume the creative process begun several months ago. Nearly 20,000 tickets have already been sold for the 33 performances offered at the Théâtre St-Denis in Montreal (starting June 22) and at the Salle Albert Rousseau in Quebec (starting August 10).

The Quebec version of Waitress, a successful original Broadway production, will be directed by Joël Legendre. It will feature Marie-Eve Janvier.

Other JPR cultural productions in progress or in development have also been backed up by ComediHa!. This is the case of the capture of Ua boy like no other, one man show by Jean-Sébastien Girard. Filming will take place as planned at the St-Denis theater this Friday, March 15 for later broadcast on Radio-Canada. Likewise, The JMP event by comedian Jean-Marc Parent will finally be presented at ComediHa! Fest-Québec for two evenings in August.

The Just for Laughs Group decided last week to protect itself from its creditors due to an unsustainable financial situation. The 2024 edition of its festival is canceled and the company has laid off 75 people, or 70% of its workforce.

The fate of other entities and productions of the group remains unresolved. The entire Zoofest festival is also protected from creditors. The old hidden camera TV show The Gags does not yet seem to have found a buyer.

The fate of the series also remains to be decided. Raw with comedians Marilyn Joncas and Eve Coté, a Just for Laughs TV production in collaboration with Bell. The start of construction announced in November 2023 included the filming of ten 30-minute episodes to be broadcast on Crave in 2024. It was impossible to obtain a comment from Bell Media to know the intentions regarding this sitcom.
