(Los Angeles) American comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host next month’s Golden Globes, a gala that is attempting a return to television after being splashed by a scandal.
Carmichael, who won an Emmy this year for his HBO special Rothanielwill be one of the few African-American hosts to take the helm of this ceremony which has been criticized for years for snubbing projects and performances by black artists.
Thursday’s announcement was made nearly a month before the Jan. 12 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.
The NBC network had refused to broadcast the 2022 ceremony to allow the Globes and their parent organization, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, to make changes in the wake of a damning investigation by the Los Angeles Timesin 2021. This revealed the inner workings of the organization, including the fact that there had been no black members since at least 2002.
The Globes have since diversified their organization and NBC has restored its telecast, but it remains to be seen how its televised return will be received. Nominations for the ceremony will be announced on Monday.
“Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show is asking for to kick off awards season,” association president Helen Hoehne said in a statement.
Carmichael won an Emmy in September for writing his show Rothanielin which he revealed that he was gay.
The Golden Globes gala has often been presented without an emcee, but beginning in 2010 the association tapped the talents of Ricky Gervais, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, among others, to host the show and serve well- cooked for guests.
