The controversy has raged in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), Thursday May 23, since the town hall decided to attack the city’s famous terraces. No more tables and chairs of all colors, they must now be uniform.
No more yellow in the pink city on the terraces of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). The municipality has decided to impose more discreet colors on the city’s 900 restaurateurs. The possible shades for the furniture will range from light gray to pastel green through blue and burgundy. A bias that divides Toulouse residents. “It actually gives an identity to the city, it strengthens its identity,” notes a resident.
The city makes a choice that is both aesthetic, to highlight its architecture, and also climatic, to fight against heatwaves. Certain materials, such as steel which stores heat, will be prohibited and colors adapted. Lighter colors will make it possible to combat heat islands, explains Christophe Alvès, deputy mayor in charge of the occupation of public property. Restaurateurs participated in the development of this new charter, but they will have to adapt. The town hall has not provided any aid for traders, but they have three years to adapt to this new color code.
