Mougins has been occupied since prehistoric times. In Roman times, the site was a stage on the Via Julia Augusta which linked the South of Gaul (Fréjus, Antibes, Nice) to Italy. In the Middle Ages, Mougins was a village organized around the parish church of Saint-Jacques: its development was based on agriculture and crafts. It was administered by the abbots of Lérins until the Revolution.
During the Revolution, the village acquired an elected municipal council. It developed thanks to tourism and the arrival of the railway, very close to Cannes. In the 20th century, Mougins took on its current configuration, Mougins Centre, Mougins Est, Mougins Sud, Mougins Ouest and Mougins le Haut. It hosts many gallery owners, starred chefs and an illustrious painter, at the Notre-Dame-de-Vie farmhouse, Pablo Picasso.
