(Montreal) Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a collision that left two people fighting for their lives near the Honoré-Mercier Bridge in Montreal.
Emergency services were notified by 911 calls around 3 a.m. Saturday of a violent impact involving a vehicle that had just occurred on an access ramp leading to the Mercier Bridge.
The vehicle was traveling on Airlie Street when, for an unknown reason, it hit a concrete wall on an access ramp to the bridge, in the borough of LaSalle.
“When the police arrived on scene, the vehicle’s airbags were deployed. On board were the driver, a 37-year-old man, and his passenger, a 31-year-old woman,” said officer Véronique Dubuc, spokesperson for the Montreal Police Department (SPVM).
Both people were taken to hospital, where their lives are feared to be in danger. The woman is said to have suffered head injuries.
“According to initial information gathered on site, the vehicle that was traveling on Airlie Street took the access ramp toward the Mercier Bridge. For an unknown reason, it hit the concrete wall of the access ramp,” said Officer Dubuc.
A security perimeter was erected to protect the scene, where SPVM investigators were trying to determine the circumstances that led to this collision.
“For the moment, driving while impaired by alcohol would be the cause,” stressed the SPVM spokesperson.
The investigation is continuing.
