In recent days, a professor has been the target of strong criticism after showing her students a 17th century painting in which five muses are depicted naked. The situation quickly escalated.

A 17th century master painting representing ancient nymphs. It is this painting that was shown to a sixth grade class by a French teacher in a college in Issou, in Yvelines. But three students refused to look at it, saying they were shocked. They would have taken this as an act of aggression against their religion. “In religion, we are not allowed to show naked women. They must have said that the teacher provoked the Muslims in the class”testifies a middle school student.

“We neither negotiate the authority of the teacher, nor the authority of our rules and our values”

Teachers exercised their right of withdrawal this Friday. The painting affair would only be a drop in a series of problems. Gabriel Attal came on Monday afternoon to announce the recruitment of a CPE, three specialized guides, and a supervisor. He renewed his speech of firmness: “At the French school, we do not look away from a painting, we do not cover our ears during music class (…) At the French school, we neither negotiate the authority of the teacher, nor the “authority of our rules and our values”.
