Were there any failures which caused the collapse of a viaduct in Haute-Garonne on Monday March 4? According to the first elements of the investigation, certain concrete slabs of the viaduct were in the process of being stabilized when one of them collapsed. “There are several possible causes, either in the studies, in the material, or in the soil”, explains Jean-Marc Tanis, president of the Union of French Civil Engineering Associations. The judicial investigation will have to determine whether any security breaches took place.
168 deaths in construction in 2022
The labor inspectorate was contacted to determine possible breaches of a safety obligation. The Bouygues company, responsible for this part of the site, also launched an investigation. Other tragedies have devastated large construction sites. Thus, the construction of the large Paris metro has caused five deaths in four years. A construction company was fined for one of these accidents. The construction sector is the most affected with 168 deaths recorded in construction in 2022.
