Cold wave: Montreal opens two temporary heat stops for homeless people

As the metropolis prepares for an extreme cold snap in the coming days, the City of Montreal is opening two temporary emergency resources for homeless people.

Located at the Y des femmes in Ville-Marie, the first heat stop opened its doors on Tuesday evening. The second will be accessible Thursday evening at the Center du Plateau, in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough. These two resources will be open from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. until Sunday, when the extreme cold period is expected to end.

The City and its partners in the health network and community organizations promise to provide on-site surveillance in collaboration with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) and members of the Mobile Intervention Mediation Team. (ÉMMIS) to support homeless people who need to take a break from the extreme cold.

“In view of the cold, we want to guarantee everyone a place. The idea is to leave no one behind,” said Valérie Plante on Wednesday morning during the executive committee meeting. “The shelters are run by community organizations. The City of Montreal supports them. Funding and the number of beds depend on the will and the targets set by the Quebec government. The City of Montreal is always there in support. »

The City specifies that some 1,600 places are available in shelters and heat stops in Montreal this winter.
