The threshold of +1.5°C could be exceeded sustainably in seven years; there is even a one in two chance of this happening according to scientists from the Global Carbon Project (GCP). CO2 emissions produced by fossil fuels are expected to reach a new record in 2023.

Across the globe, the atmosphere is increasingly loaded with carbon dioxide (CO2). With a 1.1% increase in emissions in 2023, 36.8 billion tonnes of CO2 were released in one year. A global increase which hides big disparities. The United States emits, for example, 3% less CO2 this year. This is even a drop of 7.4% for the European Union.

Rebound in emissions in China

But at the same time, in China, the world’s largest polluter, emissions have rebounded by 4%. A country which would not be the only one responsible for this bad figure. “A large portion of the goods and services that are manufactured and produced in China are not intended for the Chinese market, but are intended for export”indicates François Gemenne, co-author of the 6th IPCC report.

The entire planet therefore still consumes too much fossil fuels. Result: year after year, the greenhouse effect increases and global warming worsens. To stay within 1.5°C of warming, a drastic global reduction of 42% in CO2 emissions would be required by 2030.
