Prisons are also affected by the Omicron wave of Covid-19. The general controller of places of deprivation of liberty is sounding the alarm, because everywhere in France, clusters are multiplying.
At least 370 detainees, out of some 70,000 in France, have been diagnosed positive for Covid-19. The most important outbreak was identified in the prison of Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales), in which 84 inmates and 15 members of staff are concerned. Faced with this situation, the prison unions are calling for reinforced means, in particular the generalization of FFP2 masks for the guards.
Some prisons have for their part decided to strengthen their barrier measures, such as Fleury-Mérogis (Essonne), where Plexiglas have been installed in the visiting rooms. According to the Controller General of Places of Deprivation of Liberty, Dominique Simonnot, other sources of contamination have also been spotted in the prisons of Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), Béziers (Hérault) or even that of Argentan, in the Orne.
