Club des Irrésistibles: Michel Jean’s novel “Kukum” wins first prize

The novel kukum by Michel Jean won the annual prize of the Club des Irrésistibles des Bibliothèques de Montréal on Thursday, tied with Betty by Tiffany McDaniel.

“Several points in common connect the two winning titles of this 14th edition of the Irrésistibles prize: family, uprooting, survival, religious beliefs… Two fabulous novels that help us better understand the reality experienced by certain Afro-descendant communities. Americans and Innu”, shared on social networks Marie-Anne Poggi, instigator of the Club, who also underlined that the fight was tight “until the last minute”.

Pieces The children’s trainby Viola Ardone, and Nickel Boys, by Colson Whitehead tied for second place. The novel Three by Valérie Perrin completes the podium. A total of 136 members, including 39 French participants, exercised their right to vote.

Supported by the Libraries of Montreal, Marie-Anne Poggi created the Club des Irrésistibles 14 years ago, an online book club. The Club’s Annual Readers’ Prize has been awarded annually since 2009.
