On a voluntary basis, initially, brands will be able to display a label indicating the ecological rating of their clothing, depending on their composition or place of manufacture.
With fast fashion, there is a wide choice of clothing at affordable prices. The French buy 30% more clothes than ten years ago. To promote sustainable fashion, clothes will soon carry a label, with their impact on the environment. It will be calculated according to their composition or their place of manufacture. Clothes get points and the more they have, the worse the environmental record.
Mandatory display in 2025?
Caroline Rey, the creator of a Parisian brand, offers a QR code which reveals the traceability of her clothes. “For us, it was important to give this information to our customers. We have to do education so that consumers really realize what is behind a piece of clothing”, explains the creator of the “17h10” brand. The new labels will arrive from autumn 2024, on a voluntary basis from the brands. The government has not ruled out making display compulsory in 2025.
