Closing of the Main Déli | Sad, but not worrying, says Plante

The closure of the Main Déli, an institution in smoked meat on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, is sad, but not necessarily worrying, said Valérie Plante on Wednesday.

The mayor indicated “that we cannot base ourselves on this case to say – for example – that the restoration is not going well or that the street is not doing well”, argued the mayor in the context of a press briefing.

The restaurant announced on Monday that it was closing its doors after nearly fifty years of serving meals. The Main Déli was located directly across from the more famous and popular Schwartz’s, but served the sandwich with smoked meat favorite of many Montrealers.

“We would have liked this institution to remain, but I am convinced that there will be other restaurants, something else that will come to replace it or at least contribute to the street,” assured Mayor Valérie. Plant.

“It’s sad,” she testified. “I used to go there with my father, when we left Abitibi to come to Montreal. That and the DaGiovanni that was across from Place Émilie-Gamelin. We liked those two restaurants. I am very attached to it. »

“We would have liked this institution to remain, but I am convinced that there will be other restaurants, something else that will replace it or at least contribute to the street,” continued Ms.me Plant.

She also highlighted the major impact of e-commerce on Montreal streets, as well as the positive results of certain municipal investment operations in commercial streets.
