Climb aboard the Abeille Méditerranée, the new deep-sea tug based in Toulon

91 meters in length, 22 meters in width. You can’t miss it if you walk through the port of Toulon. This new ocean-going tugboat has been in the Var since June and will remain there since Toulon is now its home port. It replaces Abeille Flandre, which is retiring after forty years of good and loyal service.

Its role: to watch in particular on ocean liners and merchant ships

The Mediterranean is what is called a RIAS: Intervention, Assistance and Rescue Tug. Very powerful, its mission is to provide assistance to liners and merchant ships in difficulty to prevent them from running aground, and also to rescue any shipwrecked people.

At the fixed point, they can tow up to 280 tons. The Abeille Méditerranée will be able to provide assistance to the largest ships in the world, such as the Symphony of the seas for example. Its crew consists of 12 people. He is under the orders of the French Navy. In the event of an intervention, the tug must have sailed in less than 40 minutes.
