The sea is warming up, especially all around Brittany, where the water in the Atlantic Ocean is 1.3 degrees warmer.
The holidays have not yet started in Larmor-Plage (Morbihan)but many of them are already enjoying the sun and swimming, especially since the water has lost its freshness. “It should be at 18°C or even below. We appreciate it, but it’s not normal“, specifies a local resident. The water temperature is currently 2 or even 3°C higher than normal for the season. The warming affects the entire Breton coast, but especially the entire south coast, with temperatures close to those of August.
“Lack of water mixing”
“This phenomenon is explained by meteorological blocking conditions. We had an anticyclone which favored very sunny weather (…) this favored the absence of mixing of the water“, analyzes Steven tualmeteorologist. For the moment, scientists do not know if the sea heat waves will be renewed. They also ignore the long-term consequences. “Breeding dates are advanced, but this is also true for pathogenic organisms. Who will be winner ? No one would predict it”explains Fabrice Pernetmarine biology researcher from theIFREMER.
