Climate change: cities are reviewing their urban planning in the face of scorching temperatures

80% of the French population lives in cities. The latter therefore adapt to eliminate heat islands, while the summer seasons are increasingly marked by scorching temperatures. Report in the special edition of 19/20 devoted, Friday, October 14, to climate change.

Meteo France is interested in the temperatures in the city. Sensors will make it possible to better understand where Paris is hot. 30 measuring stations were installed during the summer of 2022 on streetlights. They send their data continuously. In neighborhoods where there are fewer trees to cool off and more bitumen and stones, the temperature is higher than in a park, for example: this is called a heat island.

The goal of Météo France: adapt the city to heat waves, because foggers and fountains will not suffice. Urban planning needs to be reviewed. Demonstration in Aubervilliers (Seine-Saint-Denis)where a parking lot has given way to trees. The architect used simulations of solar radiation. Eventually, this will allow a drop in the perceived temperature of up to 6°C. Everything has been designed like a natural forest, with draining soil that lets rainwater through.
