Thursday, March 21, the Italian government of Giorgia Meloni opened the borders to allow bosses in sectors in tension to recruit a workforce they are sorely lacking, for a day called “Click day”. Each year, the State sets quotas for these dedicated contracts.

The “Click day”, for “click day”, is a day during which, in Italy, bosses apply online to the administration for work permits to employ foreigners, with employment promises already established between the employers and future employees, from their country of origin. Fields, construction sites or restaurant kitchens are sectors under tension.

More than 150,000 vacancies in 2023

However, places are expensive, since each year the State sets quotas for these dedicated contracts. “The number of permits is not sufficient compared to demand”, points out Paola Mandarini, coordinator of the national union of home help employers. And for good reason: for the sector, only 9,500 positions are to be filled, i.e. “one out of ten”, says Paola Mandarini. In 2023, work permits were gone in a few minutes, leaving more than 150,000 positions vacant, and forcing the head of government Giorgia Meloni to increase her quotas, under pressure from Italian bosses.
