Clichés around the world. Does it really rain every day in Ireland?

There is a famous Irish proverb that it rains twice a week: the first time for three days, then four the second. In the heart of summer in Ireland, on a beach north of Dublin, the sky is gray and the walkers are in coats. “It’s average weather. It’s never too hot, never too cold”, observes a stroller. For another resident,It’s too cold and it’s raining all the time! You cannot plan anything in advance. Finally, you can but you will surely need a plan B!

In the water, only three people, on miles of beach, dare to swim. “If it was raining, I would swim anyway!“, however, assures a resident.

“I don’t like it when tourists don’t want to come to Ireland because supposedly it’s always raining. You put on a jumper, pull up your hood and go on! I don’t want that to put people off coming .”

A group of young girls are warming up after a swim: “We work in a store and the weather is the first thing we talk about with our customers! I talk about the next sunny day to share good news.”

Talking about the weather helps to create a link between the inhabitants. “You see the four seasons in one dayrejoices an Irishwoman. The weather varies so much it’s a real conversation starter. If the weather was nice every day, we wouldn’t have anything to say to each other. It’s windy, it’s raining, it’s humid… It’s a fun interaction!”

Fortunately, the Irish have much more to offer than blue skies. “You see a lot of Americans and you know they’re not there for the weather. We’re famous for our pubs. And in a pub you’ll never get wet!”promises Bert.

The Irish weather still has some advantages, such as the taste of dairy products. Thanks to their well-watered meadows, the cows of Ireland graze on quality grass and offer particularly tasty butter or yoghurt.
