Clément Turpin, first French referee to lead a C1 final since 1986

He marks a little more the history of his sport. Clément Turpin was nominated for referee the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, which will take place on Saturday May 28 at the Stade de France, UEFA announced on its website on Wednesday. At 39, this international referee since 2010, will officiate for the first time in a C1 final.

Clément Turpin will be assisted by two of his compatriots, Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore. Benoît Bastien, also French, will be the fourth official. “The VAR role has been entrusted to Jérôme Brisard (France), who will be assisted by Willy Delajod (France) and two Italians, Massimiliano Irrati and Filippo Meli”, adds the press release from UEFA.

He is the first tricolor referee to lead a Champions League final since Michel Vautrot in 1986. In addition, he will be the first referee to officiate in his country for a C1 final since the Austrian Helmut Kohl in 1990.

If this is his first Champions League final, the Frenchman is a regular at this European meeting. He had already been appointed fourth official in the final in 2018. This season, he has refereed seven C1 games since the play-offs, including the quarter-final first leg between Chelsea and Real Madrid. Last year, he had been on the whistle during the Europa League final.

In an interview given to franceinfo: sport in October, Clément Turpin had lent himself to the exercise of a cross interview with Romain Poite, international rugby referee. In particular, he defined his vision of his role: The referee is the facilitator of the game, who must respond to the equation between making decisions in connection with a regulation that governs his activity, and a context. So he has to find that balance.”

Before the big European meeting, Clément Turpin is expected on the lawn this weekend on the occasion of the 37th day of Ligue 1. He must referee the match between AS Saint-Étienne and Stade de Reims, Saturday at 9 pm.
